Angie Angel

BORN: Angelique Cameron, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. Artists such as Sister Nancy and Lady Anne indisputably proved that women were equally adept as DJs in the dancehall. The aspiring ragga queen, Angie Angel, embarked on her career with producers Oswald Thomas and Philip Morgan. The duo released her debut, ‘Settle Yuself’, on their Black Solidarity label in 1987. The release was well received although it was with Patrick Roberts of the Shocking Vibes crew that she gained international notoriety. With Roberts she released ‘Agony’, which went platinum when it was given a jungle remix in the UK.

In 1992 she performed alongside the Mystic Revealers at the Jamaican Reggae Sunsplash festival. Their collaboration, ‘What A Galong’, was later recorded and released in the USA, which helped establish the Revealers stateside.

In 1993 and 1994 Angie Angel was honoured as Best Cultural DJ and additionally won the Canadian Reggae Awards in the Top International DJ category. Her career was further enhanced when she recorded ‘Life’ alongside Judy Mowatt and ‘Gu Whey Done’ with Bunny Brisset.

n 1995, Angie Angel promoted, through television commercials, the Red Label brand in Jamaica. The following year her enhanced profile resulted in appearances at all the top Jamaican-based festivals alongside international performances at Reggae On The River, MIDEM and the White River Reggae Bash. Through to the millennium she performed a series of acclaimed shows including Rebel Salute and Sting that led to collaborations with Peter Hunningale and R&B legends Tavares. In spite of her high-status during the 90s it was not until 2001 that she released her debut, Life. The album’s notable tracks were, ‘People’ with Bobby Blue and a cultural remake of Patra’s ‘Workerman’, re-titled ‘Rastaman’.
